Thanks!
This website is a public history project researched, prepared and created by two UCC History MA students, Catherine Rooney and Fiachra McKermott.
This project was completed in conjunction with CARL. The Community-Academic Research Links initiative (CARL) is located at University College Cork and invites non-profit voluntary or community organisations (CSOs) to suggest potential research topics that can be pursued by students on their behalf across a wide range of academic disciplines in UCC.
CARL is based on the 'Science Shop' model and follows a 40 year European tradition with similar initiatives on-going in some of the highest ranked Universities in Europe and worldwide. CARL's mission is to provide independent, participatory research support in response to concerns experienced by civil society.
We would like show our appreciation to all those who helped us in collecting information for this website and would like to say thank you to the following:
- Dr. Malgorzata Krasnodebska- D'Aughton for being the driving force behind this project and for always giving us the encouragement we needed. Her feedback with invaluable at times.
- William O' Halloran (CARL) for guiding us to our common goal. It was a joy to work with such a professional and we advise all potential future project participants to go ahead; you will find a fulfilling and rewarding experience.
- Kevin Terry & Sean Fitzgerald for being mines of local information and for always being most helpful with everything asked of them.
- John C. Garde for inviting us into his home and giving us more for this project than we could have hoped for. John's patience with two students is phenomenal. His knowledge of the Ballybrannigan area is astounding; a website would struggle to do justice to his encyclopedia of information. It was clear, in every dealing with John, that he has an unparalleled affection for the place he once called home. His passion will, one day, bear fruit in the pages of his own book on the area.
Andrew Levis for his expert knowledge on the geography of Ballybrannigan and the time put into giving us a more rounded project. He really came through for us when called upon.
- Adriana Hegarty for finding the time in a hectic schedule to tell us about the human aspect of Ballybrannigan. It was clear that Adriana still has a great affection for the area and her words showed us how important Ballybrannigan is to so many today.
- William O' Halloran (CARL) for guiding us to our common goal. It was a joy to work with such a professional and we advise all potential future project participants to go ahead; you will find a fulfilling and rewarding experience.
- Seelight Photography for providing fantastic images of the strand.
