The Cooleen
The Cooleen was one of the many ships that
were wrecked along the coast of Ballycotton in the 19th century.
Built in 1876 and owned by Barkley and Co., the 657 ton iron barque was
carrying wheat from Belfast on 9th January 1894, when it became
stranded and wrecked 200 yards from the shore of Ballycotton, near Ballytrasna
Rock.
The captain of the ship was Captain B. Bartlet, and although the cause of the wreckage is not clear, the Irish Wrecks webpage states that the wind force at the time was heavy.
